Transitional states of falling asleep or waking up deepen our capacity for healing. Adapted from “Boundless Healing”~ Tulku Thondup
Introduction: There are two pivotal periods of the day when meditation can be especially fruitful- when you are falling asleep and when you are waking up. It is at these times that the mind is in a transition state- freer and more open to the power of healing. With this state of greater open awareness, you leave more room or space for healing energies to root more deeply and firmly in the mind.
In general, this meditation should be kept very simple and just focus on the feelings of warmth and openness in your whole body.
Practice: In sleep, the body and mind are harmoniously resting together, in the union of warmth and peace. As you are waking, and as best you can- simply recognize and remain with your body’s healing energies- be aware and feel the warmth and peace while you breathe into these feelings normally and naturally.
If your mind begins jumping ahead to the day’s events, anticipations, or ruminations- gently allow them to arise and subside as you freely attend to the open awareness of your feelings for peace and calm. Take 5 to 10 minutes simply to experience the union of body and mind in warmth and peace. Enjoy the ease and relaxation in these feelings- with an open heart and mind- be at one with the moment.
If necessary, take a deep breath or two to release any tensions that may be following your mind’s resistance to stay peaceful and calm.
When ready- simply scan your body feeling the natural peace and warmth. Start with your head… then the upper body… the arms and hands… the lower body… the legs and feet…. and then the whole body from the head to the soles of your feet. Simply be open, and immerse yourself in a boundless feeling of healing energies- their light, radiance, warmth and space.
See the healing light and feel the energies throughout the body- and around the body, an aura of warmth and peace. Enjoy the energy of this healing atmosphere. Bathe in its warmth and peace as if you were swimming in a vast body of water like the ocean. Allow your thoughts and feelings to melt and merge into the ocean of healing energies, as if you have become one with it, like water flowing and merging into water. Relax in open awareness of the experience as long as you can.
