Exercise- Infinite, Expansive Nature of Body

Adapted from “Boundless Healing”~ Tulku Thondup
Preparation: This is a sitting meditation. You want to sit in a position that is stable and comfortable- allowing yourself to be physically at ease and mentally alert. Your spine should be more or less straight- holding your upper body erect as if you were pulling it up slightly (*see- “Posture”- “Intro. Readings” for more info.). Eyes can be slightly open or closed depending upon your ability to remain undistracted and alert. Relax your muscles with some simple diaphragmatic breathing- normally and naturally- calming and quieting your mind and body (*see- “Breath”- “Intro. Readings” for more info.). Peace of mind/heart and body are pivotal in our healing exercises.
In this meditation, you are going to visualize the infinite, expansive quality of your body- taking in the vast number of cells (particles or atoms) that comprise the “space” of your body- and feeling as though you can clearly see all of your cells- the wondrous universe of cells. From this meditation, you again reconnect mind and body intimately and directly. You acknowledge that you are so much more than the bones, flesh, and organs wrapped in the skin of your body. Each part of your body is made up of billions and billions of cells- the building blocks of the body- all kinds of shapes, colors, and qualities.
Practice: Sitting in a comfortable and stable position, you start by connecting with your breath- naturally and normally breathing in and out throughout the body for a couple of minutes… allowing yourself to sense a calming and quieting of mind and body. When ready and as best you can- visualizing in whatever way your mind allows to feel as if it is in touch with the vast array of your cells- their form, fluidity, and space- inside and out.
With the mind’s eye– visualizing and seeing the cells (i.e. individually & collectively)- one or two, then imagining the vast number within each space of the body- with their varying form, color, and quality. Slowly and gently beginning with your head, and gradually moving on to the upper body, arms, hands, abdomen, legs, and feet. Take the time needed to just breathe and attend to the vast number of cells in each of your body’s regions- seeing and feeling the infinite nature of the body- and the wondrous collection of trillions of individual and distinctive cells.
Finally, rest in the feeling of the infinite nature of the body- simply breathing into this vast, open awareness- without grasping or analyzing it.
When ready… as best you can… slowly and gently coming back into the activities of the mind and body outside of our focused attention and open awareness.
