MM-Heart&ArrowsThere is an old Buddhist parable that conveys simply our experience of suffering… it is a bit like being struck by two arrows. The first arrow brings us the physical and unavoidable pain of our existence, but the second one represents all the mental and emotional anguish entangled with our reaction to it. In reality, we have no choice about getting hit with this first arrow- it is the “human condition” of sickness, old age, loss, and ultimately death- but we can learn how to respond wisely to the pain it causes. We can learn how to work with our minds so that we need not deliver ourselves the second arrow of human suffering…
