Practice- Exercising Your Virtuous Nature

Here is a wonderful little exercise you can do to help develop awareness for how virtuous qualities work to condition and precipitate the natural goodness found in us all. For example, love, courage, honesty, humility, gratitude, generosity, forgiveness, respect, etc. Before starting your day, pick a virtue, and write it down on an index or small card. Hang it in a prominent place or carry it in your pocket to help you to remember to do this- and to help keep the word in a mindful light throughout your day. You can build this practice by selecting a different virtue to work on each day.

In the morning before beginning your day- ask for cooperation in exercising this virtue… May I be courageous, etc.  Say the word in your head or aloud throughout the day. As often as you can,  form an image of yourself practicing the virtue in some specific way. Look for ways to practice it with the people and events of your day.

At the end of the day, draw a picture of yourself practicing the virtue of the day. Give thanks for all those who helped you in this work.
