Mindful e-Mails

Excerpt from “Mindfulness For Everyone”~ Norman Fischer
This is a small practice Norman Fischer provides to Google staff members in their profound personal development and enrichment program entitled “Search Inside Yourself”. As part of many exercises in mindful speech, this practice specifically addresses virtual communication. For example, when e-mailing instead of shooting off a hurried message and dealing with the consequences later, we should take an extra moment. Without direct personal communication (i.e. no body language & tonal inflections of verbal speech), often words expressed can be misconstrued and misinterpreted by the recipient as they are taken exclusively on “face value”.
Write your e-mail, then close your eyes and visualize the person who is going to receive it. Remember that he or she is a living, feeling human being. Now go back and reread the e-mail modifying anything you now want to change before sending it.
