Healing Sounds

Primordial sounds awaken both our spiritual and enlightened being…
In Eastern practices, there are a number of sacred or blessed sounds that offer true universality in their nature- and anyone can benefit from them. There are three prominent and pervasive sounds you might try to incorporate in your own practice. The sounds are “OM”, “AH”, and “Hung” (pronounced hoong, with a soft “h”).
Combined these three “seed” syllables comprise a very powerful chant and an evocation of spiritual power. They are also associated with the process of awakening and higher consciousness. In some practices, they literally signify a praise to…
They are pure and archetypal in nature- free from elaboration, concepts, and grasping. Simply giving voice to these sounds allows us to be more open. They embody the very nature and purity of our being- the energy of reality- and its primordial openness. Their use and application in healing practices span generations of ordinary and enlightened beings.
Each syllable represents particular healing qualities. Singing “OM” brings peace, bliss, clarity, firmness, courage, stability, and strength; “AH” brings energy, openness, expansion, and empowerment; and “Hung” is associated with enlightenment, infinity, essence, and oneness.
In practice, you can sing each syllable with equal emphasis- or else emphasize and repeat one syllable according to the particularly healing qualities needed. For example:
OOOOOOOOOOMMMM AHHHHHHHHHHHH HUUUUUUUNNNNNGGG
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMM AHHHHHH HUUUUNNNGGG
OOOOMM AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH HUUUNNNGGG
OOOOMM AHHHHHHHHH HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUNNNNNGGG
The syllables can be sung however you feel is soothing- in a tune that rises and falls or on one note, quietly or loudly, with high pitch or low, with soft or thundering sound. You can work with these sounds to transform difficult thoughts, feelings, and images.
Often, the practitioner will call forth their healing source of power with these sounds- invoking one’s healing force. For e.g. warm, radiating light from the sound- an embodiment of the sound itself. With the resonating sound, the light gradually begins to fill your mind and body- rejoicing in the light and sound that brings healing to every part of the mind and body.
These syllables can also be chanted silently in an exercise called “threefold breathing” where the three syllables are said to ourselves in unison with our breathing. Mentally, we say “OM” on the inhale- “AH” on the pause- and “Hung” on the outbreath. Let your breath and the syllables flow naturally- the mind, breathing, and the syllables should be “one” in this exercise. Silent chanting should always dissolve into relaxed breathing.
