Clear Sanity IV

Clear sanity offers the power of illuminated awareness to realize the full spectrum of our humanity.

In our meditation practice, the energy of mindfulness carries within it the energy of concentration. This is why our early attending exercises were so important- fundamental to cultivating our capacity for single-pointed concentration. When mindfulness becomes powerful so does our concentration. With concentration, we open the possibilities for breakthrough- for penetration- and for insight into understanding the nature of our object of attention. When the light is powerful, focused, and concentrated, it can illuminate so much- objects and phenomena reflect elements of their nature that we may have never seen. What was hidden or veiled becomes revealed. Clear sanity is this illuminated awareness… our mindsight.

To see this “light”, we need to engage our meditation practice over and over again aspiring to cultivate a true conviction for- and a direct (actualized) connection with the “emptiness” and “spaciousness” of our minds so that this enlightened energy may help us to finally penetrate and cut through the nature of our “self-clinging” tendencies that drive our suffering and obscure our genuine happiness. To awaken to our natural and mindful intelligence, we clearly see the impersonal nature of how things we experience directly as the knower or as the perceiver simply arise and fall away. Clinging and attachment to protecting the “self” is deeply rooted in our confusion, ignorance, and neuroses. We are simply part of the natural flow of things- a continuous stream of experience comprised of thoughts, feelings, forms, and perceptions that change moment to moment. The sensory attunement of our sixth sense of awareness is interdependently connected with the outer world of things and phenomena. We cannot separate the awareness of the knower from that which is known.

Even in times of pain, there is “ease” of mind within our experience when we can draw upon the mindful intelligence to let go of our grasping. Maybe things aren’t truly what they appear to be… Without clear sanity, our clinging tendencies to protect what is self-constructed and of egoic nature may only offer a perceptual form of solidity. Realization comes from our ability to see through the illusory nature and the emptiness of our self-clinging and grasping patterns. Clear sanity is a state of presence liberating us from the self-limiting habits that serve to imprison our potentialities. The potential of mind is seeded in our capacity to appreciate all aspects of it.

With this illuminated awareness of mindsight, our experiences become direct and authentic allowing us to realize the full spectrum of our natural intelligence and the completeness of our humanity. Inherent to this state of enlightened wisdom, we cultivate the skillful means to strengthen our capacity to distinguish the mind’s baseline of “narrative chatter” from the ongoing sensory streams of direct experience in the here and now. This is a universally powerful means opening our full potentiality for creative and imaginative responses to life’s ever-changing situations.

Flashes of this illuminated awareness may be subtle, but they are deeply profound in nature. The realization of our awakened wisdom is best rejoiced in the sharing with others so that many more might re-discover the mystery and wonderment of their humanity- as best they can- and in their own way.
